Titanium Dioxide Conveying

Overcoming Difficulties with Titanium Dioxide Conveying

First mass-produced in 1916, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most widely used white pigment in plastic production because of its brightness and very high refractive index. TiO2 is also an effective opacifier in powder form, where it is employed as a pigment to provide whiteness and opacity to products such as paints, coatings, plastics, paper, ink, foods and medicine. You’ll even find it in most toothpastes. Approximately 4.6 million tons of pigmentary TiO2 are used annually worldwide – a number that’s only expected to increase as use continues to rise.

Consistent feeding is essential when working with TiO2. At HorizonPSI, we specialize in bulk material transfer systems which include PVC Resin Blend systems that are ideal for use with TiO2. Watch a video of our 8-foot long KleenFeed screw and a Fluid Flow Hopper combination in action during testing.

The Fluid Flow Hopper utilizes low pressure air to aerate the fluidizer flow pad and flex the material inside the hopper. The fluidizer flow pad is constructed of a ¼-inch-thick needled, non-woven polyester. The KleenFeed volumetric feeder operates with a poly helix assembly versus a stainless-steel assembly. The polymerized plastic has a slick surface that prevents buildup, making this combination a good choice for running TiO2 and other products that would build up on stainless flighting. As you can see in the video, there were no issues getting product into the throat of the screw and the flights were completely and evenly filled. flow.
